I live in Wisconsin, which means there is a dreadful season that comes around in November, and lasts anytime up until June. It’s called Winter! I personally do not find much pleasure in this season, but gardening is something that I can start indoors until the weather cooperates again. It sure helps pass the time!

When to start seeds indoors for spring planting.
I am rather new to this whole gardening thing. I am no expert, I am only on my second year, however, I sure like to research and learn about anything I find peeking my interest. I have watched the cost of groceries go through the roof. I am tired of buying fresh vegetables just to throw them into the crisper drawer and they are brown the next day. Or while washing the twenty dollars in berries I just bought, find the middle of them full of mold. It’s happened so many times it’s insane! Who wants their hard earned money to go right in the garbage? It’s hard enough as parents to get by! So why not use what is out in this big ole world to our advantage?
I found that the Dollar Store (now Dollar and a quarter store) has seed packets! You can get 4 packs for $1.25. Even at Walmart they are at least $1.44 per pack! Do your math here people! People have their own preferences, but last year I bought these and I found nothing wrong with them. All of the produce I grew and harvested was wonderful. It’s also a total plus that I didn’t spend a fortune!
If you want to get ahead of the game, head on over to the Dollar Store in January, they may even put them out sooner. Get these packets as soon as possible because they do not last long! I grabbed over twenty packets last week and was so excited. I just want to get planting!
Since the winters here are harsh and nothing can withstand our weather, I just start them early indoors. I also found many little planters at the Dollar Store and you can buy whatever dirt you want to begin your garden! When you are trying to figure out all of the winter gardening prep, obviously you will need the extra space indoors, the right temperatures and the right conditions. But hey, it helps to get going as early as you can!
When you buy your seeds, just simply look at the back of the packet and it will tell you how many days they take to grow. From that, you can figure out which ones to get ahead on. Some of them are only the best when they do not need to be transplanted. Those ones you would want to wait on and plant directly into the ground. Others, like lettuce, I liked growing early. We eat enough salads in this house that it made sense to just always have this on hand. This vegetable is not very difficult to grow, it grows rather fast, and you can clip it off and it just starts regrowing! It’s very nice to have growing in a medium planter right in the house that is easily accessible.
