Screen Time and Finding a Healthy Balance

Finding a healthy balance for electronics can be difficult, but you are the one that knows your children the best and how your household runs. You’d be surprised by all the good that can come from the screen time!

10 Reasons why screen time is good!

So as far as smaller children go, there are many good educational apps and even games that they can play and they don’t even realize they are learning. If you research games or learning for toddlers you can pick from a wide variety. Once children are of school age, they can also play games to help keep them refreshed in math or reading.

Many games or shows that children watch do help with their language building skills. My son would watch shows on sign language and he is pretty fluent in it at just two years old. It can also help them talk clearer earlier and form more sentences.

My daughter was always fascinated by making videos of all her drawings she would make. She learned how to make stop motion with them. Basically it’s a digital flip book. Let’s face it our world is digital and they will need to learn how to edit, or run programs that many of us don’t even know how to use. So using programs that can help with video editing, drawing or even composing music can add a great creativity boost.

My son’s dad and I are not together but the one way he can stay connected with him is through FaceTiming him. He also can do this with his other sister by his dad. Who doesn’t want to be able to see their family members whenever they want? Screens allow this!

I grew up in a very small town and I wasn’t exposed to many different cultures or even different kinds of people. We have technology that allows us to be able to learn about all kinds of wonderful things out in that big world.

Have you ever had a horrible day and just popped in your ear buds and listened to your favorite music or meditated? I love to meditate and I want to start introducing my children to it as well. My daughter is a teenager and we all know how difficult that time of our lives is. She would benefit to just shut out the world and listen to calming music or meditation. My son is in his terrible twos so helping him just to regulate his emotions is always helpful.

Remember back when we were growing up and being introduced to the Nintendo and PlayStations? We always kid around that it’s to help with hand-eye coordination. Well guess what that’s still true and it helps tune up fine motor skills as well.

My daughter and I have pretty hectic schedules sometimes and can’t always get away or have time to go do something fun. One thing we always agree on though is once my son is down for a nap or in bed, we make time to just enjoy a movie together, usually with ice cream!

When it comes to special needs children, there are many screen based tools that can help. There are speech therapy apps, sensory games, visuals to help with schedules and so much more!

When my son comes home from being at his dad’s for the weekend he is a bit hard to handle. Some of you know how hard that first few days back is for transitioning. We use every Sunday as his “tablet day”. He controls his emotions a little better just being able to sit and play his games or be able to zone into his own movie. So for us that have separate households for our children, I do feel screens can help with that transition home because it’s not diving right back into another household and how it’s run.

So when you’re trying to use screen time and finding a healthy balance, remember it’s not all frowned upon or bad. There can be some good that comes out of it as well.
